Vauxhall has been producing the supermini model called Corsa since 1993; in the UK it replaced the very popular Vauxhall Nova. The Corsa name was rolled out in the UK and replaced the Nova name to bring consistency throughout Europe, in some parts of Europe the Nova was already called the Corsa. A coupe version of the Corsa was also launched coach outlet , called the Vauxhall Tigra, which became very popular with lady drivers after for a sportier look.
The current version of the Corsa was launched in 2006, it is based on the Gamma platform, which was co developed by Fiat and Opel. The same platform is therefore used on the Fiat Grande Punto. In 2007, a year after its release the Vauxhall Corsa was named “Car of the Year” by What Car?
Vauxhall carried over most of the engines from the previous generation Corsa to the latest one, in total there are 7 engines to choose from – 3 petrols and four diesels. The smaller petrol units feel under powered and definitely not suitable for lots of motorway miles. The 1.3 litre diesels with either 74 or 89 bhp are the most popular. In the petrol range the 1.4 litre with 89bhp provides a good balance between power and fuel economy.
Earlier on this year Vauxhall unveiled the Corsa VXR Nurburgring Edition, the most powerful Corsa to be produced so far. The VXR Corsa in Lisburn features a retuned version of the 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, in the special edition model it produces 205 PS. The little Corsa can do 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph.
