MINI celebrates Two Million MINIs
The two millionth MINI rolled off the production line at the MINI factory in Oxford at the end of August, and the model was driven by Prime Minister David Cameron. Mr Cameron called the MINI “a fantastic symbol of the UK’s strength in the global automotive industry.” The two millionth model is a White Silver metallic Convertible with a blue denim roof and a number of bespoke interior and exterior extras including special alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel. The car will be given out as a prize on Facebook in a competition called ‘Two Million MINIs – Two Million Faces’.
Since 2001 when the MINI went back on sale, over 1.5 million MINIs have been exported to customers in more than ninety countries around the world. The factory in Oxford currently produces four models – the Hatchback, Clubman, Convertible and new Coupe and was the third largest vehicle manufacturer in the UK in 2010, producing 216,032 models. From the end of 2011, a fifth model, the MINI Roadster, will join production in Oxford.
Joining the celebrations for the two millionth MINI were the car’s enthusiast fans at Minifest in Staffordshire, which took place just a few days later on 4th September. Three MINIs used in the original Italian Job were on display at the event, refurbished by none other than Sir Michael Caine. The cars featured the three colours used in the film, red abercrombie sale , white and blue and it is safe to say that these three models are probably more expensive than most used cars. Staffordshire MINI fans were given a real treat at the event as out of over twenty cars used in the film, only these three remain, with the rest having remained in Italy and scrapped.
